ITEMS is sponsoring the 'Ukuqala' project[13.12.2011]
We are sponsoring the Ukuqala project which provides AIDS orphans and HIV positive children in South Africa with a new home, the 'Village of Hope'. The Ukuqala project is being implemented by 25 volunteer architecture students from the University of Stuttgart. In February 2012, the students will travel to South Africa, on a voluntary basis, where they will build a house for the Tembalitsha organisation in Grabouw near Cape Town.
Tembalitsha is a South African non-government, non-profit organisation that helps children that have been either indirectly or directly affected by HIV. According to the World Health Organisation, in 2009, approximately 2 million AIDS orphans were living in South Africa alone. The Village of Hope takes in AIDS orphans and HIV positive children. There they receive what is most in their situation: hope for a carefree childhood and the longest life possible. However, the Village of Hope is extremely overcrowded and is in dire need of expansion. Beginning in February 2012, using traditional and recycled materials, the architecture students will build new accommodation, free of charge. ITEMS is sponsoring this project.
